Looking at old buildings

Status:Active, open to new members
Coordinator:
When: on Thursday afternoons
Monthly 1st Thursday
Venue: The Bradford Club

This group meets on the 1st Thursday of each month at 2.00 pm at the Bradford Club. The purpose of the group is to look at historical buildings, mainly local, in the context of their architecture and history. In general our approach to the study of the buildings is focused on the three Fs - Form, Fabric and Function - but for many buildings their social and economic context adds significantly to our understanding. The types of buildings visited are varied including ecclesiastical, municipal and civic, industrial and domestic and of historical interest. The group has valuable input from a knowledgeable enthusiast but group members contribute to the meetings and make arrangements for visits to suitable sites.

Visits are also arranged to interesting buildings in the area. On the 3rd Feb 2022 the Group visited the Oakwood Hall Hotel, Bingley. The building was constructed in the 1860s and contains features designed by the eminent Victorian architect William Burges and stained glass designed by William Morris and the pre-Raphaelites.

We shall be visiting Bradford Movie Makers on the afternoon of Thursday 2 May to see their interesting building, hear a little of their history and have the opportunity to see one of their films. Please email Judith Riley if you would like to join the Group on this visit.

New members are welcome.

Refreshments available.

There is a charge of £2.50 per session for the room hire for meetings at the club.
