Looking at old buildings

Status:Active, open to new members
Coordinator:
When: On Thursday afternoons
Monthly 1st Thursday
Venue: Bradford City Library Meeting Room

The next meeting of the group will be on Thursday 5 November at the Mechanics Institute and will start at 2.00 pm. Derek Barker will be giving a talk on Public Art: Statues and Sculpture in Bradford. Since the 19th century the great and the good have been celebrated in Bradford with outdoor statues in marble and bronze. A smaller number are retained in museums and galleries. This process has continued, but more recently purely decorative items have been added, often in steel. All these works will be described.

Visits are arranged to interesting buildings in the area or meets at the City Library if not on a visit.. The purpose of the group is to look at historical buildings, mainly local, in the context of their architecture and history. In general our approach to the study of the buildings is focused on the three Fs - Form, Fabric and Function - but for many buildings their social and economic context adds significantly to our understanding. The types of buildings visited are varied including ecclesiastical, municipal and civic, industrial and domestic and of historical interest. The group has valuable input from a knowledgeable enthusiast but group members contribute to the meetings and make arrangements for visits to suitable sites.

If we meet at the Library there is a small charge to cover the room hire.

New members are welcome. Anyone interested in contact Judith.
